Prof. Karl Aberer
Distributed Information Systems Laboratory (LSIR), School of Computer and Communication Sciences (IC), EPFL, Lausanne

Karl Aberer is a full professor for Distributed Information Systems at EPFL Lausanne,  Switzerland, since 2000. His research interests are on semantics in distributed information systems with applications in peer-to-peer search, data integration, semantic web, trust management and social, mobile and sensor networks. Karl Aberer received his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1991 from the ETH Zürich. From 1991 to 1992 he was postdoctoral fellow at the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1992 he joined the Integrated Publication and Information Systems institute (IPSI) of GMD in Germany, where he was leading the research division Open Adaptive Information Management Systems. From 2005 to 2012 he was the director of the Swiss National Research Center for Mobile Information and Communication Systems (NCCR-MICS, www.mics.ch). From 2012 to 2016 he was Vice-President of EPFL responsible for information systems. He is co-founder and CEO of LinkAlong, a startup established in 2017 providing analytics capabilities for open source documents based on technologies for knowledge extraction developed in his research. He is member of the editorial boards of VLDB Journal, ACM Transaction on Autonomous and Adaptive Systems and World Wide Web Journal. He has also been consulting for the Swiss government in research and science policy as a member of the Swiss Research and Technology Council (SWTR) from 2004 to 2011.

Prof. Marilyne Andersen
School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering (ENAC), EPFL, Lausanne

Marilyne Andersen heads the Laboratory of Integrated Performance in Design (LIPID) at EPFL, whose research activities focus on building performance and decision support in the architectural context, especially as it pertains to human comfort, perception and health and on the use and optimization of daylight in buildings. She is Full Professor of Sustainable Construction Technologies and was the Dean of EPFL’s School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering (ENAC) from 2013 to 2018. Before joining EPFL as a faculty member in 2010, she was Assistant then Associate Professor tenure-track at MIT, where she founded the MIT Daylighting Lab in 2004. She holds an MSc in Physics and a PhD in Building Physics from EPFL, and has been a Visiting Scholar at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California, USA, in 2001-02 and 2009. She is the author of over 100 refereed scientific papers, recipient of several awards including the Daylight Research Award 2016. She was the leader and faculty advisor of the Swiss Team, who won the U.S. Solar Decathlon 2017 competition. She is a member of the Board of the LafargeHolcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction and co-founder of the Sàrl OCULIGHT dynamics. She is also a member of the Editorial Board of the Elsevier Journal Building and Environment and of the Taylor and Francis Journal of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) LEUKOS.

Prof. Claudia R. Binder
Laboratory on Human-Environment Relations in Urban Systems (HERUS), ENAC, EPFL, Lausanne

Prof. Dr. Claudia R. Binder is the Director of the Laboratory for Human-Environment Relations in Urban Systems (HERUS) at EPF Lausanne, and holds the Swiss Mobiliar Chair in Urban Ecology and Sustainable Living. Before joining EPFL, she was Professor of Human Environmental Relations at the Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich. Since 2016 she is member of the research council of the Swiss National Science Foundation / Division IV. Her research interests lie in analyzing, modeling and assessing transitions towards sustainability. For doing so she develops inter-and transdisciplinary methods for analyzing the key aspects of the ecological and the social systems and moreover the relations, feedbacks, and regulatory mechanisms between them.

Prof. Jeffrey Huang
Media and Design Laboratory, School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering (ENAC) and School of Computer and Communication Sciences (IC), EPFL, Lausanne

Jeffrey Huang holds a DiplArch from ETH Zurich, and Masters and Doctoral Degrees from Harvard University, where he was awarded the Gerald McCue medal for academic excellence. He started his academic career as a researcher at MIT’s Sloan School of Management (Center for Coordination Sciences). In 1998 he returned to Harvard as an Assistant Professor of Architecture and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2001. In 2006 he was named Full Professor at EPFL in Switzerland where he holds joint professorships at I&C and ENAC, and heads the Media x Design Lab. He was also a Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University, a Visiting Fellow at Stanford University’s d.school, a Honorary Visiting Professor at the University of Sheffield, and a Berkman Fellow at Harvard University (Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society). Professor Huang’s research examines the convergence of physical and digital architecture. His recent work investigates new artificial design paradigms (design decoding and encoding), theories of experience design, and the application of algorithmic urbanism in Chinese cities.

Prof. Antonio Loprieno
President of the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences

Antonio Loprieno was born in Italy in 1955 and grew up in Brussels, where he attended the European School. He then studied Egyptology, linguistics and Semitic studies at the University of Turin, where he earned his doctorate in 1977 and worked as a teaching and research assistant until 1981. After receiving a fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, he went on to successfully complete his habilitation at the University of Göttingen in 1984. That same year, he became an associate professor at the University of Perugia and taught there until 1989, when he was appointed Full Professor of Egyptology at the University of California, Los Angeles. During his time at UCLA, he chaired the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures and was also a visiting professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the École Pratique des Hautes Études in Paris and the University of Heidelberg. In 2000, Antonio Loprieno returned to Europe to take up an appointment as Full Professor of Egyptology at the University of Basel. He also served there as Rector from 2006–2015 and as President of the Rectors’ Conference of the Swiss Universities (CRUS) from 2008–2015.

Prof. Jakob Zinsstag
President of the td-net Scientific Advisory Board / Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, Basel

Prof. Dr. Jakob Zinsstag is a veterinarian with a PhD in tropical animal health. He spent eight years in West Africa at the International Trypanotolerance Centre in The Gambia and four years as the director of the Centre Suisse de Recherches Scientifiques in Côte d’Ivoire. Since 1998 he heads a research group on human and animal health at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute. Since 2011 his is deputy head of department of Epidemiology and Public Health at Swiss TPH. He focuses on the control of zoonoses in developing countries and the provision of health care to mobile pastoralists using a One Health approach. He is past president of the International Association for Ecology and Health and president of the scientific board of the Transdisciplinary network of the Swiss Academies.
