SHAPE-ID

cooperation project 2019-2021

SHAPE-ID is an EU-funded project addressing the challenge of improving interdisciplinary cooperation between the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS) and STEM (Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and other disciplines. The project will examine best and poor practices in AHSS integration through a survey, extensive literature review and a series of learning case workshops with stakeholders. SHAPE-ID will ultimately deliver a toolkit and recommendations to guide European policy makers, funders, Universities and researchers in achieving successful pathways to interdisciplinary integration between AHSS and other Sciences, as well as within AHSS disciplines.

td-net is closely following the project and monitors its action and results.

Professionalising Inter- and Transdisciplinary Research Expertise

Thursday, 10 December 2020, 13.00-14.15 CET (12.00-13.15 GMT)

SHAPE-ID has found that a clear and well-defined process is needed for inter- and transdisciplinary research projects in order to manage such innovative interactions and ensure long-lasting results. This webinar will invite experts in inter- and transdisciplinary integration to consider how expertise can be fostered in academic and professional environments. What is integration expertise and why is it needed in order to develop strong collaborative research projects with diverse participants? What is the profile of the inter- or transdisciplinary scientist or researcher? What tools and methods are available to build this profile?
Our panel will discuss these issues, followed by an interactive Q&A from the audience chaired by Professor Jane Ohlmeyer (Trinity College Dublin), Principal Investigator of SHAPE-ID and Chair of the Irish Research Council.

Panellists:

Dr Sabine Hoffman | Eawag – Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology
Is there a new profession of ‘integration experts’ on the rise?

Dr Petra Biberhofer | Participatory Science Academy, University of Zurich and ETH Zurich
How to create transformative learning spaces to foster integration expertise

Dr Nikki Brand | Technische Universiteit Delft
Convergence as an opportunity for transdisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity

Details about the Learning Case Workshop, Sept. 2020

The question
How can the Arts and Humanities be fruitfully included in inter- and transdisciplinary research and funding programmes? What are the most suitable criteria, tools or strategies for that?

The Learning Case Workshop
This Learning Case Workshop (LCW) is part of a series of six workshops held across Europe organised by the project SHAPE-ID: Shaping Interdisciplinary Practices in Europe. Due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis, our remaining LCWs, including the workshop scheduled to take place in Zurich, will take place online. This workshop seeks to explore the current situation in relation to how Arts and Humanities (AH) can be better integrated in interdisciplinary research (IDR) and transdisciplinary research (TDR).

Aims of the Workshop
The workshop seeks to learn from participants’ experiences and jointly co-produce recommendations for Arts and Humanities integration in inter- and transdisciplinary research and further co-produce recommendations to broaden and increase the reach and relevance of Arts and Humanities participation in interdisciplinary research (IDR) and transdisciplinary research (TDR), by:

  • opening a space for exchange and networking,
  • identifying necessary transformations (concepts, institutional models, funding, etc.) for IDR/TDR and policy;
  • discussing instruments and concrete strategies for AH integration in inter- and transdisciplinary research funding.

The discussion during the LCW will take the following as guiding questions:

  1. Why and with what purpose is it necessary to broaden and increase the reach and relevance of AH participation in IDR/TDR?
  2. How does this influence the process and results of IDR/TDR? What kind of intersections or reconfigurations among disciplines are needed?
