39th AIS Conference "Beyond talking heads: applied and experiential learning through an interdisciplinary lens"
> 19-21 October 2017, Baltimore, Maryland, USA.

In 2017, the Association of Interdisciplinary Studies (AIS) annual conference is themed “Beyond talking heads: applied and experiential learning through an interdisciplinary lens.” Within this theme, we encourage workshops, presentations, and performances that explore interdisciplinary approaches to project-based learning on (and off) college campuses. Within this theme, our four, interrelated areas of focus are:

Defining, executing and assessing project-based learning: Using project based learning to address complex problems, adapting existing initiatives such as NAE’s Grand Challenges for Engineering, and assessing student learning outcomes from applied learning.
Adding value through the scholarship of interdisciplinarity (SOI): Facilitating meaningful connections between disciplinary perspectives, and making integrative strategies such as common ground and bridging strategies explicit in the learning process.
Integrating the arts into other disciplines: analyses of projects such as arts integrated STEM (STEAM) initiatives and conflict resolution through theatre that create “added value.
Articulating the role of interdisciplinary studies programs within the evolving ecosystem of traditional disciplines, applied fields, and emerging interdisciplines on a contemporary college campus that includes faculty, professional staff and professionals of practice.
Beyond these major areas, our AIS conference is broad and inclusive. We welcome presentations on a wide range of activities related to interdisciplinary education and research. This includes presentations that examine the role of the academy in fostering interdisciplinary collaborations.

Embracing Complexity in Health: The Transformation of Science, Practice, and Policy
> 27-28 October 2017, George Washington University, Ashburn, Virginia, USA

Global, national and community health challenges in the 21st century are complex. They are defined differently by diverse stakeholders and across traditional disciplines and professions. They change unexpectedly, and defy rigid plans. Our solutions too often result in little effect or unintended consequences and can make the complex even more unmanageable. Systems and complexity sciences offer fresh perspectives and novel approaches to a world that is rapidly changing and increasingly interdependent.

> 3. November 2017, Universität Basel

Kein Gewinn ohne Risiko.

Museomix 2017
> 10-12 November 2017, Epfl ArtLab, Lausanne

Exactly one year after its inauguration, the EPFL ArtLab will provide the framework for Museomix for a truly creative marathon. From November 10 to 12, participants will imagine and develop new forms of cultural mediation. At the end of the three days, the general public will be invited to try out the prototypes.
For Museomix, which usually works with one or two museums, this will be a new challenge, since ArtLab brings together science and the arts for the general public in one extended space. For EPFL, hosting this year’s Museomix means connecting this space with outside communities even more, strengthening the spirit of sharing and interaction with visitors, and developing prototypes in a very tight timeframe.

Partizipative Forschung: Methodologische Reflexion und praktische Erfahrungen
